Possible Subsidy Scheme For Apprentices YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

CHRi»TUi±URUJ±, Tnis uay. That there was a likelihood1 of a serious hold-up in the State houslng scheme unless skilled labour was made available waa stressed by the Hon. P. O. Webb, replying to a deputation this morning. The Minister appealed to the Trades Unions to. co-operate, with the Government in an endeayour to remedy the Dominion shortage of skilled craf tsmen. Referring to the apprenticeship problem, Mr. Webb said that difficulties had arisen, but, if necessary, the Governnient would have to siibsidise the employment of youth of 19 or 20 to train them. "We hope to ©volve some practical proposals but the scheme cnay have to deviate from the orthodox methods of treating youth unemployment,' ' he said.
