The Rangitane. The New Zealand Sliipping C'o., Ltd. advises that its R.M. v. Itangitata, en route to Wellington, sailed from Londou in the evening oi Thursday last. Mr Semple For Mohaka. Advice has been received by tlm Hon. W. E,. Barnard, M..P., that the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. it, Semple, will accompany to Mohaka the Minister of Railways, the Hon. 1), G. Sullivan, as previously arranged, but owing to the state of his health, Mr Semple will not engage in any diseussions •with locai bodies. Shop'Aasistants' Award. A discussions of tbe application for a Dominion award for shop-assistants will take place in Hastings on Monday moruing, when the Hastings Retailers' Association is hoiding a further meeting to consider the matter. The meetliig is being held at 10 a.m. in the Oharnber oi Gommerce room, and as eyery retaiier is ali'ected by the question a fuii atteiidance is expccted. Mr Ohas. "If a man has no warraht of titness when his car is unsafe to drive, he is a menace on the road, and his case is far more serious than that of the man who has no warrant but whose care is in good order," said Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Waipukurau yesterday. A case of this nature was brought by Main Highways Inspector W. E. Yates. who intimated that he desired the prosecution to serve as a warning to others. Highway Improvementt. Two improvements to main highways in Central Hawke's Bay are to be e£-' fected soon. The Publio Works Department is inviting tenders for the construction of approaches tp the overbridge across the railway line near Waipukurau. Part of the Fernhill-Ta-kapau main highway through Tikokino is to be improved by the re-alignment and metalling of one mile, and the Waipawa County rouncil ia umting tenders for this work. "Ask a Poltceman.'* ' There is an old saying, "If you want to know the time ask a policeman," but tbe things some people will ask the police to find out for them are surprising The Hastings police received a ietter from an addre«s in the Wellington district yesterday asking: "As I am desirous of inserting an advertisement in the columns of the local newspapers would you please advise me of the names of two newspapers whicb circulate in your district and also the advertisement rateB for three insertions." Distinguished Skiers. One of the world' s finest skiers may visit Mt. Egmont next month, when an American team will be in New Zealand. Final details of their New Zealand tour have not yet been arranged, but four Americans will probably yisit Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Egmont- and Mt. Cook before leaving for the Australian ski championships. The team will consiet of Richard Durrance, Laughlin, Richard Bradley and Stephen Bradley. Durrance is the United States champion ekier, and has held the American title for both downhill and slalom events. Rules of tHe Road. Mr Semple is determined to educate all classes of the community in tiie rules of the road. The lateet step is "the distribution to school children of a pamphlet of feafety hints for both cyclists and pedestrians. Copies of this pamphlet were distributed yesterday at sehools in Hastings. An introduction, addressed to parents, urges them to make their children familiar with tiie rules and courtesies of the road and pointing dut that the yearly total of several thousand persons injured includes a large number of children. The meeting was called with the object of furtherng a .movenient started some time ago to build a Scout hall in Duke etreet. The chairman pointed out that a fair amount of money would require to be •xillected before the building could be proceeded with, and after various suggestions, Messrs Wiikins, Lowe and Olarke were appointed deiegates to irifcerview the area committee with irietriictions to offer the combined commitee's assistance in whatevfer waye arid means might be devised to find the necessary capital. Faced With the difficUlty of havilig nowliere to sleep in Waipukurau the night before last, beeause the public and private hotels were full, an insuraiicC represehtative whb frequently visits Central Hawke's Bay came to ihe conclusion that a caravan attached his ear would eliminate practically all of the worry attached to travelling. Accordingly, he placed an order with a Hastings firm for the construction of a caravan. whieh he will make his hdme. His work requires him to be cbnstantly on tbe road, and his travelling expenses are rather high bedause sonietimes he finds hiittself iUilbs oilt in the country at nightfall, necessitating travelling into the nearest town for his night's lodgdng and reburning to the eountry district next moruing. This excess travelling will be elirninated, for, wherever he may be as dusk sets in, tliere shall he make his liomc for tbe uight. He hopes to save hiniself about £2 a week by liauliog his home about with hiM. t
