LOCAL-BODY PLANS APPROVED Others Await Minister's Decision JOBS FOR 200 OR 300 MORE? Employment for approximately 160 men at present on sustenance was assured when fiuality was reached yesterday on several of the schemes put before the liaison officer of the Department of Labour, Mr Walter Bromley, by Hawke's Bay local bodies for the absorption in permanent empdoyment of sustenance labour. Other schemes which have been held up pending a decision by the acting-Minister for Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, oifer prospects for the employment of a further two or three hundred of the province's unemployed. In making a statement to the "Herald-Tribune" this morning on the outcome of the negotiations yesterday', the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P., who presided at the conference, expressed hi8 satisfaction at the good results achieved. The local-body representatives, he said, had been most helpful in the manner in which their terms had been put before Mr. Bromley. The works arranged represented only a portion of those placed before Mr. Bromley, many of the proposals would have to wait a decision by the Minister. It was hoped that when these further proposals had been dfealt with employment would be offering for a further tw0 or three hundred men at present on sustenance. It was hoped there by to absorb the remainder of the unemployed of Hawke's Bay. Mr. Barnard added that Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P., had associated himself to a large extent with the proceedings yesterday, and had considerably helped to facilitate the decisions arrived at. "During the discussions yesterday with local bodies on the question of providing additional employment for the unemployed during the winter period, it was not surprising that some of the works proposals put forward eould not be completed during tho mterviews," said Mr. Barnard. "What was surprising was the number of jobs upon which fiuality was reached. They involve employment for approximately 160 meji for periods varying from two months to four months. "This estimate does not include the 80 men who will be employed additionaily on the Ngaruroro for more than a year if the representations of the conference are successful. "The works in which finality was reached include in the Napier borough : Domett street, Marine Parade improvement scheme and George's Drive tar-sealing, with the question of the Kennedy road extension still under consideration. "The Hastings proposals include four works in co-operation with. the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board (additional to the Ngaruroro scheme). "The Bluff Hill protection work proposed by the Napier Harbour Board and works for the Hawke's Bay County Council and the Te Mata Park Board of Trustees are also to be undertaken. "That is not a complete list, but it is certain that over 200 new jobs will be found in the district as a result of yeeterday's interviews," Mr. Barnard said. "The result reflects great credit on the local bodies and upon the officer who represented the Governm/bt "
