GROWING OF SUGAR BEET
Afforestation Work Near Hastings SCHEMES SUBMITTED The possibility of the establishment of a sugar-beat industry in Hawke's Bay that would permanently take several men from the ranks of sustenance labour was broached this morning by Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P./at tbe meeting between Mr Walter Bromley, represenj.ting the acting-Minister of Labour, tbe Hon. P.C. Webb, and representatives of local bodies of the province. Mr Cullen considered that the establishment of a permanent industry would be a better method of tackling the unemployment question than the proI vision of jobs that would be completed in a short time. Hawke's Bay, said Mr Cullen, could Igrow sugar beet that had the highest I sugar content of any in the Dominion, and he felt that, if the necessary area J of 1000 acres could be found for the establishment of a sugar-beat factory, an immense benefit could accrue to tbe province, in addition to relieving einployment. Indications were also present that an asparagus industry could be developed along the same lines. , I | Proposals are to be put. before Mr I Bromley in camera by the Hawke's I Bay Rivers Board, the Waipukurau j Borough Couneil, the Hawke's Bay j County Couneil and the Te Mata Park Board of Trustees, the Havelock North I Town Board, the Napier Harbour I Board, the Hastings Borough Couneil, I the Taradale Town Board, and the Na- I pier Borough Couneil -in that order, to J he followed by a proposai regarding j afforestation near Hastings. Mr Bromley is later to visif Wairoa, and he will meet the Dannevirke Borough Couneil at the end of .this week on his way back I to Wellington I
I Decisions regarding the proposals I qjade will probably be made public tomorrow.
