Notts Recover in Seeond Innings N.Z/s HARD TASK
(Received 23, il.6 a.m.) NpTTlNGHAM, June 22. Notts took full advantage of a pei1fect wicket, though the bowling WUs steady enough to keep ihe scoring rate ttiodex'ate. Keeton and KnoWles passed the century uixseparated befoi'e lunch. Hardstaff and Guim built oix to tliis advautageous opening, a fine partnei'ship taking the score to 199 for the fourth wicket. Hardstaff' s batting suggested that the bowlers will find his difficult to dislodge on a good wicket in the test. Cowie agaixi bowled with great heart but afl unhelpfui wicket minimised his menace. Dunning pegged away de.terminedly. He might easily have had more euccess, several times beating the bat but missing the stttmps. The Tindill-Moloney combination agaln- capt'ured a wicket. Tilidill's WOfk was very steady, there being Only iWo byes in the first 300. Neither Roherts nor Weir appe&ted to cause the batsmen undtte worry, through a difficult catch was missed in the slips off the latter. In the absence of Yivian and Gallichan, Donnelly shouldered the lefthand slow bowling fairly inexpensively till the wood was laid on late in the day by Gunn and Voce. New Zealand faced a difficult task in dismissing this strong batting side on a beaUtiful wicket. Nevertheless, their performance in this match is an encouragement for the test.
