First-Round Wins to Coombe And Andrews VICTORY TO CRAWFORD
(By Telegraph-
— Copyrigh*.}
(Eeceived 22, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, June 21. In the first round of the singles at Wimbledon J. Crawford defeated Menzel by three sets to two. Crawford 's backhand was working perfectly in the early sets. His forehand placements also were fine, but Menzel caused worry with his hard service and heavy topspin drivos. Both played clever tennis, hut similarity of taetics tended to dullness. The mateh lasted 2 hours 20 minutes. Bromwieh, the young Australian^ making his first appearance at Wimbledon, opposed only a good club player. The Australian was not very conviucing. McGrath started shakily and was unable to find a reply to Ellmer 's steadiness, but he found his toueh in the second set and thereafter outplayed his Swiss opponent. Eesults;—~ . MEN'S SINGLES.
