Law Relating to Criminai Aboriion
(By Teiegraph—
MASTERTON, Last Aight. A suggestion that the Scottish system of accepfcing a 75 per cent. jury verdict should be given a trial in criminai abortion cases was supported by Dr. Doris Gordon in a publie address given in the Masterton Munieipal Hafi tonight. In reply to a question Dr. Gordon said she ddd not believe that women jurors would overcome the evii because there were women in New Zealand to-day with very strong Eussian and Communistie views, who said that abortion should be legalised. It had been mentioned to her that in these cases men jurors were "bought," and if that were true of men, women also might not be dmmune to the temptation. Between 150 and ,200 people were present at the meeting, and the following resolution was carried unanimously: "That we Tespectfully urge the (lovernment to appoint a commission under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 3908, the chairman to be a judge of the Supreme Conrt, to inquire into and report on the existing machinery of the law relating to criminai abortion, to recommend the legislation required to make it more effective, and to recommend legislation to govern and control the sale and advertisement of contraceptives and ahortifacients.
