Waipukurau Council Desires No Uneconomicai Service

WAIPUKURAU This Day. "It seems to me that our duty is to safeguard the taxis in operation, and not to encourage them to run uneconomically,"' said the Mayor of Waipukurau, Mr i. W. N. Mackie, at last night's meeting of the borough council, when consideration was given to a request by a taxi proprietor for permission to operate an extra car. The Town Clerk and Engineer, Mr H. B. Smart, said he thought that the four taxis at present in operation were sufficient to meet the clemand, except on speeial occasions, such as raee-days. On these occasions, however, speeial licenses co.uld be granted. The request of the taxi proprietor, Mr W. Manning, was deferred pending the attitude of the Government being made known regarding the licensing of taxis. Ttie council approved the transfer of two taxi licenses from Mrs E. M. Turnbull to Mr J. Kuzmich. At last night's meeting of the council Mr Mackie presidtd over Crs R. W. Carpenter, J. L. Brathwaite, H. A. Martin and J. C. Windle.
