AU pre* - sent stood in silence for some time as. a* tribute to.^his mempry, after which the Court eitting was adjourned. for thq ; There was a, full mnster of repres sentatives of Hastings- and Napier Iega| ■ •firmsi and Court • taxed - to- the ntmost. There 'were lfl members of the legal profession seated at the solicitors' table. It was "explained by Mr David Seam nell that: the Court was. meeting in ua* pleasant circumstances. Death with* out warning had taken Mr Duff "frost their midst. "We aire here to-day; "-said Mr Scan* nell, "to pay that tribute to which hfil Duff was so justly, entitled. It is tht last offering we can make. We havt found Mr Duff at all times a strenuA cus fighter for. his client, and alwayi capable, painstaking, just and honoui* able." The Magistrate, Mr J. Miller, sai^ he fully assoeiated himself with Mf btannelljs remarks.^ On such an occa* .sion woxds conld not adequately eak press one 's f eelings. He had knowd Mr Duff as a young man in Dunedin and had regarded him as "a capablg lawyer and a conscientious man. Not only had he been of , great assistance tt the Bench, biit he had also been a pub4 lic man with' the "interests of tht people at ; heart. Mr Duff had spent t great deal' of .time in public affairs and had been held in the fiighest esteem bjf Bench, Bar and public.
