PALMERSTON N. Jnne 15. ' 1 That you feel your isolation more than you need is oue fact that has ixnpressed me in the few days I havebeen in New Zealand,'' said Dr. I. L. Kandel, Prof essor of Education in the International Institute at Columbia University, New York, addressing a meeting in Palmerston North last evening. "There is also a danger of too much self-eriticism, ' ' the doctor continued. "My field is comparative education and my objective to ascertain trends. 1 can assure yon honestly in the few hours I have been in your district (visiting Massey College and the Feilding Agricultural High Sehool), 1 have found new ideas as valuable as anything I have seen in my wanderings. " Continuing, Dr. Kandel said, there* was no reason to be diseouraged. Problems were similar in any part of . the world; there was no prdblem to whieh there would not be found an analogy and most pf the problems had arisen from pretty much the same forces. Education was passing tlxroughi a period of transition. There would be an opportunity for orientatxon in the large number of lectures to be given in the four centres by noted authorities who wOuld raxse tho issues during the New Education Fellowship conference. This did not mean a solution had been found but all must stretch their minds to find enlightenment and apply their thinking. A solution would depend on the spirit of approach.
