V.C HEROES

Presented with Coronation Medals AUCKLAND, Last Night. Two of the first (Joror.alion medals to arrive in New Zealand were received this week by two Auckland holders of the Vietoria Cross, Captain Judson, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, and Lieutenant Bassett, who is manager of the Upper Queen street branch of thc ! National Bank of New Zealand. : Neither Messrs. Judson nor Bassett, ! were on the New Zealand medal list j and their medals were posted direct to them from Buckingham ' Palace, tho ; envelopes bearing the crown and royaJ ; monogram and the Palace date stamp. "An enclosed sheet states that the medal is 'forwarded "by command of his Majesty the King, to be worn in comrnemor(ation of their Maesties ' , Coronation, kay 12, 1937." . Neither of the receipients expected j ' to receive the medal and its arrival was j a pleasant surprise. Apparently they I had been left out of the New Zealand • list because the authorities were aware ; that the medals would be sent direct j from England to all holders of . the j . Vietoria Cross throughout the Empire. j This information was not, however, j communicated to Messrs. Judson and Bassett. It is thought Vietoria Cross holders were singled out for special honour in having their medals despatched from Buckingham Palace as it is unlikely that all the thousands distributed in Britain could have been sent out in that way. This, however, is only conjecture. >
