Any discussioh aho'tit aiterihg the trefid of world trade was futile and did hot strike at the roots of the prohlem. The solution lay in increasing trade hy increasing the wages and therefore the purchasiiig power of the workers. This would have to he taken iiito congidetation £n any negotiatiotis With Aiherica. The New Zealand Government tuai aihed loyal to the policy bf ImpCnal oreferences and it had hot inuch faith ih achieving prosperity by means of iuggling tariffs, said Mt Savage.

"I personally admire President Eoosevelt as niuch as 1 det&st men who wait for something to turn up. There is the greatest sympathy in New Zealand for the American experiment because of the common ideals on whieli it is based. "If other countries followed similar objectives. they would go far to solve tlie world 's problems. Therein lios the solid foundation of any agreement between Ameriea and the Empire. Meanwliile the New Zealand Government will wait nntil detailed proposals are submitted. ' '
