i LONDON, June 12. 1 New Zealand to-day faced one of the most difficult tasks of the tour in meeting Middlesex who- in their last game scored an innings victory over Yorkshire. The teams were: — Middlesex: Human, Butterworth, L. A. Smitli, Price, Edrich, Hendren, Compton, Hulme, Smith and Sims. New Zealand: Cowio, Roberts, Yivian, Wallace, Pagc, Carson, Donnolley, Tindill, Dunning, Hadlee and Weir. The New Zealanders made an imprcs-': sive beginning but a heavy thunder- 1 storm in mid-af ternoon stopped play for j tw« and a-half hours. The tourists then seemed to be headed for a big. score and the batsmen were not troubled. Hadlee and Yivian opened well,' scoring 49 at the rate of a run a' minute. Hadlee patiently picked up xuns till he tapped 'a top-spinner. The experiment of sending Vivian in. first proved a signal success, the left-hander . playing the opening fast bowlers with complete confidence and scoring steadiily to all parts of the field. His chanceless innings lasted neariy two hours and he hit five fours. Page was quietly competent, meeting all the bowling with certainty and progressing steadily with diversified ,/ strokes. He reached his half century just under an hour and a half. He hit five fours and two threes. The pair gave the tourists the best pre-lunch score of the tour, also the best morning partnership of the season at Lords. Page fell after a steady innings of two and a quarter hours when the wicliet was helpful to the slow bowlers. Wallace after batting half an hour for ten runs before the rain commenced played the slow bowlers unmcrcifully with drives and pulls, hitting sevcn twos, four fours and two sixes. It was a dashing display. ' Donnelly completed one of the best . days the tourists have had by the confident hooking of short balls and clean stroke play. The tourists won frequent applauso from the crowd of 5000. Scores: — NEW 713ALAND
