WORKS PROGRAMME
Further Coitference on I June 24 THE SUBSIDY QUESTION As the outcome of the conference last Baturday between representatives or local bodies and the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb. advice has been received that a further conference of representatives will now be held at Napier on June 24 next. On this occasion there will be an officer of the department present. "It is the department's desire to learn from local bodies the nature and extent of works which could be undertaken by men at present on sustenance," wrote Mr F Watters, Town Clerk of Napier, in his letter to the Hastings Borough Cbuncil and other local bodies advising of the meeting next Thursday week. "It is apparent that the present subsidies of 45/- per man per week, or 12 per cent on total cost is not sufficiently attractive to local bodies. "I understand that what the department wants is an estimate of each job showing labour cost separately, together with suggestions as to how the gap between the amount available from the local body's own funds and the total cost can be bridged," he added. "I am advised that plans and specifications are not required."
