WHEN WE HAVE FAILED
When we have failed, God looks upon the weary, wasted hours; And all the sacrifice the work entailed, And sorry stalks of the disappointment trailed Low in the dust — whdre we had looked for flowers; And prayers that surely nothing have availed Since we have failed. He takes Himself the ground on which our powers Were spent in vain, and joihts His strength to ourS, Until with joy some hidden gem is hailed Where we had failed. When we sueceed, When blossoms fill our basket to the brim, Sometimes so soon their beauty seems to fade, * Because on our hot foolish hearts is laid The glory that should all have been for Him. God help us that we do not fail indeed When we sueceed. Lord, we have failed In Thine eyes only when we have not tried, When in despair we have sat down and wailed; Forgctting 'twas Thy wisdom should : decide How far our little efforts had prevailed. ! Find in our failures jewels yet unveiled, Keep our success from being dimmed j by pride. If we have loved, and love alone abide At last, we have not failed. — Doris Canham.
