Armacourt Surprises In King George Handicap A WIN FOR LORD VAL

AUCKLAND, Last Night. A crowd of 30,000 — double that presejrt on the same day last year — thronged Ellerslie to-day for the second day of the Auckland Racing Olub's Great Northern Steeplechase meeting, and sunny weather fayoured one of the largest winter attendances in years. The track was very holding. The totalisator handled £72,189 10s, as aghinst £40,037 10s last year, the increase being £32,152. The figures for the two days total £122,530 10s, as compared with £84,288 103 last year, there being an increase of £38,242. Results: — HUNT CLUB CUP, of £300; about 2i miles. 1 ALL IRISH, 10.5 (A. St. Musk made the running for a round from Valpeen, Don Erma and Allegretto. Valpeen then took charge and going up the hill the second time he was joined by Don Erma, the pair being three lengths clear of Erination, St. Musk and Forest Glow with an in- | terval of six lengths to Allegretto and Roxy. Irish Comet was near the rear. Valpeen showed the way over the double on the flat to Don Erma, Forest Glow, Erination, AllegTetto and Irish Comet, who had come .prominently into the pioture for the lirst time. Irish Comet joined Valpeen in the lead running up the hill the third time and he .was clear at the stonewall entering the straight from Valpeen, Forest Glow and Allegretto. Irish Comet then went on to win from Valpeen by three lengths. Allegretto was - eight lengths away third, just beating Don Erma, followed by Forest Glow and Billy Boy.
