Letters to the Editor

Local Bodies Should Not Be Stampeded Sir,-— It is to be hoped the local bodies concerned will not be stampeded by the Hon. P. C. Webb into employing a lot of labour on unnecessary and unproductive works. As our wortny Mayor pointe^ out, Hastings is highly developed and our needs are few so far as municipal wants are concerned. Our Hospital Board and Harbour Board are spendiug money as fast as they caii get .It, and complaints are coming from all over the country with regard to exeessive taxation. Whether found by the Government or local bodies, ajl wasteful expenditure has to be paid for by the thriity worker in excessive taxation, borrowed money or inflation. We have a Labour Government i/i power who have failed dismally to provide permanent reproducbive work for ihe unemployed, and they are trying to to.i't the responsibility and blame on to the local bodies. The Public Works Department has arxnies of rnen all over the country working on the roads, and huge sums are being spent withopt any tangible aisset to show Ior it, The Hon. P. C. Webb says we have 1000 mer on sustonance in this d'istrict — surely a very poor record considenng the army on Public Works and the b"oom period we are living in, so far as primary products are concerned. The honourable gentleman can lay a great deal of the blame at the door of the Government if he wants to know the cause of increa'sixig unemployment, Irksome xegulations and restrictions make tit diiiicult for farmera procure suitable labour, and we are told that large areas of land are going back instead of being made to carry niore stock, Able-bodied young paen prefer to stay in the towns and live on gustenance rather than go a few miles out into the country and procure work, lf we have so many men on sustenance at the present time, when the Government has nnmerous temporary works on hand, what is going to happen later on when these works are finished? — Yours, etc., PERMANENT WORK. Hastings, June 8, 1937,
