Chrischurch Council Superceded

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The drastic step of placing the coiitrol of taxi business in Christchurch under a metropolitan licensing authority instead of the City Council has been decided upon by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. Semple, following representations made to him by the council. The effect of the change will be that the city by-laws dealing with the taxi business will be superceded by the regulations issued under the Transport Licensing Act. Christchurch is the only oity in the Dominion in which this Step has been considored necessary and Mr. Semple said that the action had been taken at the request of the City Council. "I am determined to eud sweating in Ihe taxi business in this city," said the Minister this morning, when announcing h'is decision. He said tliat he had conferences yesterday with the . traffic committee of the City Council and with th£men engaged in the taxi business, and he had made it clear that he was not going to stand any nonsense.
