THE AWANUI STREAM
Engineer's Report to Rivers Board ASSISTANCE T0 BE S0UGHT A report on the survey of the Awanui stream was made to the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board yesterday by the engineer, Mr. Guy Rochfort, but consideration of it was deferred so that the question of assistance might be again taken up with the Public Works Department. The chairman, Mr. C. Lassen, remarked that the work appeared an ideal one for employing men now on sustenance. The report dealt in detail with lowwater levels and falls, and advoeated a Iow stop-bank. "After carefully examining tho Iocality," stated Mr. Rochfort, "I am of the opinion that the whole flood discharge from the Poukawa stream did not at any time reach the Awanui at Paki paki and that normally it overflowed on to the low lands on the nortlieast as, I understand, it does now To prevent this, a low stop-bank would be more offective and less costly than im creasing the size of the drain." The surveys were not sufficieutly detailed to afford an accurate estimate of the cost of the proposed works to be made, but the following figures were suggested as approximate: Lowering the bottom of the Ngaruroro river £450 and cutting points and narrows in the Awanui stream £250, making a total of £700.
