'A STRENUOUS TRAMP

Our Own Correspondent.)

Party Reachcs 3400 Feet in . Ruahine Ranges

. (From

WAIPUKURAU, Tbis Day. Heavy snow and strong winds made conditions rticfeedingly trying for a party of 24 trainpers from Waipukurau, Hastings and Napier, who endeaveured to reach the hig, hest point on the Ruahine ranges in the back country west of Central Hawke's Bay last Sunday. Under the leadersliip of Miss Moncrief, of Hastings, the party reached a point about 3,400 feet up in the ranges, but then had to retrace their steps because of the snow, which in most places along . the track was knee-deep. The party, which included Miss Farrelly and Messrs. J. Osborne and K. Hindman, all of Waipukurau, left Napier at 5 a.m. on Sunday by lorry, arriving at Hinerua Ridge, in the back country, at 8.20 a.m. The trampers then proceeded on foot via Peter Anderson's Track for a distance of about five miles, halting at a point about tkree-quarters of an hour's tramp from the top of the Ruahine ranges. After lunching there, snow and wind made tramping conditions so difficult that it was thought advisable to return. This strenuous tramp had its compensations, for apart from indulgfing in vigorous exercise, the party had the pleasure of finding themselves in native bush country covered with a mantle of white. The snow lay thick on the trees, presenting a beautiful sight.
