Weather Variations. The weather of late in Wairoa has been full of variations, and the conditions of years ago are being daily up&et. Formeny no frosts occuired iminediately before or after rain. This is now not the case. Also, in fermer years, a .frosty morning, like Monday, was followed by a beautiful day, but on Monday it ended up, aiter rain, with a bitterly cold shap. A Phenomenon. N.one of the recent earthquake ehocks repqrted in various paris of the Dominion have been felt in Wairoa, but many residents state that on certain winds a heated air current was experienced, and beiow it a coid current. They have attributed it' to the New Gumea earthquakes, and it may possibly . be true, i'or during the eiuption in the Straits of Sunda the same experiences were noted, plus a cloud of dust in the atmosphere for more tha'n a year Obituary. The residents of Wairoa and distriet will regjret to learn of the death of Mr. S. B. Small, which occurred at Wanganui on Monday morning arter a long illness. Mr. Small, who was born in Wales, eame out to .New Zealand when about 20 years of age. He had resided in Wairoa for the last 14 years, and carried on the business of a bookseller and newsagent until illness oupervened and;he had been living in Wanganui. During his stay in Wairoa he proved himseli a good elocutionist, and besides taking part in local theatrical presentations, he won a good niany events at the munical competitions in Napier and Gisborne. He leaves a widow but no family, and Mrs. •Small will have the sympathy of a wide circle in Wairoa. Ministerial Visit To Wairoa. . Entirely informal and private a-s was the visit of Ministers to Wairoa on Friday afternoon, the Hon. P. C. Webb met the Mayor and discussed with him several matters which bad already been orought before other visitingj Ministers. it was a very hurried gathering and no intimations were sent to the Press. Matters discussed were mainly how to make provision for the uiiemployed during the coming winter, which subject is to b* followed up at Napier. The Wairoa sewerage scheme, the plight of the backblock settlers, the sustenance questio'n, housing shortage, unskilled iabour, and the provision of a deep-sea harbour- were all brought up aniT tentatively- dealt with. Road SliG. A slip was reported on Saturday on the Wairoa-Rbtorua road, near the Mokau falls, and cars had to transfer passengers 'at the spot, but it was expected that the slip would have been cleared by Monday evening. Widening work is proceedilig at this spot. j Winter Weather. After two or three days of mild autumn weather during the past week, the climate in the Waipawa distriet took a violent turn for the worse on Saturday. There was a heavy fall of snbw On the ranges during Friday night, which had the effect of causing the temperature to fall rapidly. A series of south-westerly squalls were oxperienced during Saturday, and these were followed by a very severe frost. Sunday, however, was gloriously fine,.' but in the early houre of Monday morning the winter conditions retuvned. Waipawa Ladies' Golf. The members -of the Waipawa Ladies' Golf Club will play a Stabieford bogey match on Wednesday afternoon, commencing at 1 p.m. sharp.
