Chairman's Report Mr A. C. Russell, chairman, at Saturday's annual meeting of the council, presented his report as follows: — "Another year of heavy expenditure has been experienced, and I must congrntulate the members of the council on the healthy "" state of the county finances, considering the higher costs brought about by the increased wages, which were not provided for at the beginning of the year. It is very encouraging to have our ratepayers meet 99 per cent of the rate struck, and the council appreciates that fact. During the past year each riding has had special commitments in the way of sealing and metalling. "Hatuma riding completed a section of the Hatuma road sealing at a cost of £898 12/-, and let a further coutract for 135 chains of sealing and this is uxmer way, the priming coat having been laid. Metalling on Nicholls road, costings £92, has also been carried out. "Purimu riding has completed tne metalling our Tourere- Whetukura road at a cost of £450, and this section links the two ends of metalled roads, making a good all-weather road at that end of the riding. "Tho estimates prepared for the coming year show that the general rate will remairi the same as last year: Hatuma ld in the £, Mt. Herbert ld in the £, Purimu IJd in the £. The hospital Jevy is increased to £777, and this means. that the hospital rate must be increased from ^d to 5/16d in the £ to cover the increase. In addition to this, a harbour rate will have to be struck to cover a payment of about £450. "Ratepayers will "see by this that although their rate demand will show a higher figure than last year, the couaty share is no more, as the increased amount is paid out to the hospital aud harbour boards. The roads generally aro in very fair order and compare more than favoutably with those of a siniilar nature in other areas; "I again thank the councillors for their assistance and co-operation when dealing with the affairs of the council. The engineer-clerk, Mr Price, has carried out his many duties in a capable manner, and the council appreciates his services and those of other, members of the staff . ' '
