Trial Gallops on Hastings Tracks NAPIER CANDIDATES
(By
Conditions were perfeet for this time of the season for the semi-final gallops at Hastings, for the Napier Park winter meeting, which takes place next Wednesday and Saturday on the Greenmeadows racecourse. Most of the gallops took place on the No. 1 inside grass track, which was fast. Pakanui (I. Briggs who has brightened up considerably, was in best galloping forifn, reeling oli the last five furlongs of lxis task in 62secs. This was a pleasing effort, although only a light-weight was carried. Puccini (H. Murray), not ridden out, registered t>4*secs. for five furlongs. The big brown gelding in Mr G. D. Beatson's stables gave auother impressive display of jumping for a novice. Quake (ii. Murray ), who did not. appear to be relishing his job over tne last two furlongs, took 1.18 . to cover the six furlongs, tho first tivo in 24secs., three m 37secs. and four in 50secs. The full brother to Ncre-js (H. Young) just shaded Marching Un (H. Murray), with Oha (J. Forsyth) a coupie of lengths back, at the end of live furlongs covered in Offsecs. Star Laa and Anubis, two caudidates for novice eveuts next week, from W. U. Giuifiths's stable, were not galoped, but in company mdulged in puce worlc on the plough. Biygain (ju. murray), wearmg a bandage on the near ioreieg, went live futrlongs in an impressive nianner, when the clock showed 62*secs. Cotslield (J, Walsnj gave a neat and fast display over a lound of the country. Jtie will race at Napier m the iiurdio events, but at Hastings will be at his own 30 b — steepleehasing. Pladie was given a few lesoons over the pony iiurtlles, and the wa y he shapeu strongiy suggested that this was not his first lesson. The two stable companions, JDusKy Orown and Lady vYessex, were given a work-out together "over onee round 011 the plough. Hady Wessex, wide out all the way, was in front at the fimsh, but , had the better of tho weights by at ieast a coupie of stone. Mercian x-Tinee (E. lleslandes) and Tres fciee (J'. Forsyth) hopped away ai the once-round post, but it was only over; the last live .furlongs that any pace was ciapped on. From the fivexurlong post home occupied 67*secs. Traiier (J. Forsyth), in running threequarters of a miie in 1.21*, had fully four . seconds up his eleeve. He is ui great heart. Laviua (H. Young) and Passion Flower (H, Callinan), on the plough, were only playing funs in their run along, as both could have . done much better time if asked. Marching Song and Pikete were sent over four of the schooling hurdles, but Pikete kuew too much for her Gisborne companion, out jumping him at every fence. For hacks Gironde (C. Stratton) and Shani (H. Murray) did well to register a shade better than 63secs. for five furlongs, with Gironde, carrying ^ a stone more weight, ahead at the finish by a coupie of lengths. Blue Tiger was schooled over a few hurdles and made no ferror. He will not race until the Hastings meeting. Seattle (J. Walsh) had the edge on Panorua (H. Murray) all tho way iu a five-furlong gallop in 65secs. Buster Brown (H. Callinan), in taking 53*secs. for half a mile, did not do as well as expeeted, but perhaps would have done better with a mate. Boyal Bengal (E. Deslandes) and Wykemist (J. Walsh) were sent a round of steeplechase fences, which was run in the very fair time of 1.40. Boyal Bengal outjumped his companion at most of the fences, and for a beginner took his fences in a most confident manner. However, at the last fence, when a little careless, he failed to nieasure his fence correctly and toppled over, but the mishap had no serious consequeuc'c, and will do the Chief Buler more good than farm. Fossicker (II. Callinan) and stablemate Gasman (J, Walsli) Tan a. smart five furlongs in 62*secs. The first two furlongs were run in 23*secs., which shows that theso two geldings possess speed. Cletrac (J. Forsyth) found in Jop. Tx)uis (H. Murray) one with a little too much puneh over five ftirlongfi. which was clncked to be ruri in fi^lsocs.
