Vitamin' A is, in some ways, like a polieeman. A policeman cannot make people goo.d, but by being present, ko cau stop them from being bad. It was bclieved that "Vitamin. A possessed some power of - preventing inf ection, especially in connection with respiratory disorders. Dr. S. W. Clausen and Dr. A. B. McCord, of the TJniversity of Rochester Medical School (U.S.A.), found that the presenise of adequate amounts of the vitamin did not prevent infections, but that the absence of adequate supplies of it permitted such infections. During fevers, they observed, the body uses its stored "Vitamin A at a rapid rate, and when the fever subsides replenishes the supply rt a faster than norma! rate. vThere were more . marriages, but • fewer births and.deaths, at Waipukurau last mouth as compared with May, 1936. Last month's figures are as follow (those in parentheses representing the figures for May, 1936): Births 2 (8); deaths, 5 (6); marriages, 3 (2).
