Both were sentenced to a year's imprisonment with hard labour when they appeared in the Court before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. Telfer was described as a labourer, aged 42, and Crocker as a butcher and labourer, aged 46. "The whole of these cases are of thefts from niotor-cars. A very large number of complaints have been received." said Detective-Sergeant Holmes, referring to the eight charges against accused. "There seems to be little reason why they should prey on people the way they have been doing. Both , have'got bad records." The deteetive-sergeant said that Detectives Watt and Trethewey had been detailed to investigate complaints. Suspicion had fallen on accused, and goode had been found in their house. "These thefts tvere committed while under the influence of liquor," Telfer claimed. ' 1 Most of the stuff has been , recovered." Crocker had nothing to say. "You are both aiming steadily at being habitual criminals," said the Magistrate. "It doesn't rest with me, but that's what will-happen."
