Mothers
A WOMAN
Sir, — Can you tell me what mothers are for? Like all citizens I was greatly thrdlled to hear of the birth of triplet daughters to Mr and Mrs Anderson. I was expecting to go along on Wednesday cvening to the meeting calied by the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison. On such a vile morning as this was, the three beautiful healthy babies are taken to Wellington. Well, Sir, I consider it a slur on motherkood. The other day I read in your paper how Mr Anderson and tho family were awaibing the coming home of Mrs Anderson and her beautiful babies. I being a mother, was thinking of the mother. God gives the mother the very marvellous duty to ■ go through what no other creature understands. When she nurses and cares for her jDabies she rises to heights unknown by any one but a mother. What sort of a homeconting would to-day be for* tho mother and father? Fancy those dear little babies whose natural right is the love and care of their parents being sent away to the end of the ialand for months among strangers. Of course there will .be pictures in the Preas of a crowd of nurses and the babies. No wonder motherhood is- at such a low ebb in our little country. Thankine: you. — Yours, etc.,
Hastings, May 31, 1937. [The triple fcs wero sent to the Karitane Home in Wellington on tho advice of a doctor because it was felt that, without special treatment, the babies would not be able to survive the winter. This treatment will -be available for them at the Karitane Home, and they will be bronglit back to their mother as soon as the winter months have passed. Their home being on a farm, lacked adequate hot water and other essential conveniences, and it was also thought by the Plunket Society, which was instrnmental in having the babies taken to Wellington, that this course would enable the mother to regain her strength. — -Ed.
