TRAINING GALLOPS
Work on the Hastings Track NAPIER PARK CANDIDATES With the Napier Park winter meeting not a fortnight off and the Wanganui races approaching, there was a fair amount of interesting work on the Hastings tracks on Saturday morning, when most of the fast work was done on the plough. The want of rain is again causing the going and conditions to resemble those of a summer track. • • • Mon Ace, carrying a light weight, was sent over six furlongs at a work-ing-gallop pace to register 3.19J. He has but one minor place to his credit, but onpresent indications will very soon bctter that. • • • Pakauui, looking in great heart, ran the last four of live furlongs. in 49£ secs. He has fully recovered from the inaludy that caused him to linish last in the Hawke's Bay Golden Jubilee Cup, but, aithough he is forfeiting bis Auckland engagements, he will race at the Napior and Hawke's Bay winter meetings and then in all probability will go on to Wellington and Riccarton later. • • • On tbe inside grass Gasman recorded 50 secs for half a mile. He too has .nado recovery from tbe mishap that prevented him from starting the first day at Hastings earlier in the month. • • • • Shu, the full brother to Neresu, and Star Lad were given a run along over three furlings to register 42$. Shu looks like coming to hand quiekly after his long'nforced spell • * • Scsltle, in from Pakipaki, dashed over three furlongs on the grass track in a shade better than 38. It would uot be surprising to see this mare accouut for a race before the season I'loSHS. • • • . Maisyas, with a light weight, broke 65 for fiye, and his stable-mate, Cotsfi'eld, was given a working gallop ovei a round. • # • Taro, with a welterweight in Ihe saddle, and doing his task comfortably, run half .a mile in 51$. He will in all probability race at the Wanganui meeting next Saturday. • • • \ Ihe Arausia filly and the Gainscourt flily were timed to run three furlonga iu 41. but were both under restraint. * • * Blygaiu, who has never looked iu better condition, was by no means all out when running half a mile in 51. She will compcte at the local meetings. • • • 9 Trailer, a gelding who appeurs to, have improved considerablv of lato, was hard held all the way to keep back to Seyfried aover seven furlongs in 3.35. The pace was slow over the first portion of the journey, as the first quarter took 28 secs. • • • Tlger Gain, who will accompany Joumet to Wanganui, and Tupai were reslricted to a working gallop and took 1.29 for tkree-quarters of a mile. The former is a little on the big side and impresses as most likely to require a race. • ' • . •. Journet and- Mereian Prince were given solid pace work, both bowling along in fine style. Journet promises to star a very fit horse for the Century Hurdles at Wanganui on the opening day and is sure to have a solid Hawke's Bay backing. • • • ■ Pladie was given a working gallop over five furlongs, and Lavina ran the iast four of five furlougs in 52$ secs. • • • Joe Louis registered 37$. for ,his three-furlongs sprint, wi(h Fossicker doing a second better for the same distance. Fossicker never looked better and appears to be getting more solid, Before coming here he was a very lightlinished animaL On the grass Gironde was sent seven furloDgs, of which tlio last six took 1.18. . First C.hapter ran from the six to the three-furlong post in 36, but this particular three-furlong stretch is the fastest on the Hastings plough. • 9 9 Tres Sec, who impresses as having improved a great deal since coming down from the station, was ' restricted tp a working gallop. He is to contest the Napier Ladies' Bracelet. • • • Koyal Bengal (E. Deslandes) over a round of the steeplecHase "fences gave a fine exhibition for a beginner. He has only to carry on with the good work to win crossMjountry events in open company, and that before very long, too.. Vernon Colello has won inany cross-country and hurdle events, and in this the Chief Buler gelding looks like adding materially to his record. Lono Spear went over the sod bank with "Ben" and then was pulled off, jumping that obstacle in dashin'g style. Marching On, the full brother to Marching Song and Panerua, - took 53 -J for half a mile, with the former perhaps doing it the better of the pair. * *' , • A big brown gelding by Tractor, the proporty of Mr G.' D. Beatson, was given a1 round over the schooliug hurdles, and, aithough he jumped a little big at one or two of tne hurdles, game a dashing display for a beginner, Ele has every appearance of ono day deveioping into a tip-top steeplechaser; in fact, he may do what Luna Lux failed to do win the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. * • • Mr G. D. Beatson was on the track, and, aithough still hobbling about with the aid of & couple of stieks, is making a sure if slow recovery. He will leave to-morrow for Auckland to see Peter Baekford compete at the Great Northeru meeting; • - • • Hawke's bay horscs performod dismally and below expectations at the Foxton meeting last HafuTdsy Many times have Hawke's Bay hot-t's let their supporters dowu on this particular track; in fact, the majority of our liorses fail to handle the sandy conditiona. * * * The biggest disappoinlment of the lot. vas Sir Nigel, who failed to get iuto the money and cost local speculators a neat little parcel. Royal Banquet was not expected to make a showing in the Cup, yet rau second; so in his case he ran better than expected. Contaet, Iddo and John Charles ran much below their form in the bnrdlea.
