Work Done by Waipawa County Council

WAIPAWA, This Day. Bridge-building and repair work have been carried out by the Waipawa County Council on a fairly extensive scale during the past year, according to the annual report of tbe chairman, Mr N. M. Paulsen. He points out that a very small road-sealing programme bas been carried out during tbe yeax. It was originally intended to reconstruct and seal a considerable lengtb of tbe Napier Wellington main highway, but the uncertainty of the position in regard to tbe taking over of tbis highway by the State caused a postponement of tbe sealing programme. Tbis highway became a state highway as from November 1, 1936. A considerable amount of bridge construction and repairs work was carried out during tbe year. Tbe following year — McMillan's bridge, Tikokino >ridge, Carlyon's bride and O'Callaghan's bridge. Balfour's bridge was damaged by tbe flood of February, 1936, and tbis was repaired. A general overhaul of timber bridges was commenced and a number of bridges pilt into a good state of repair. A new motor grader was purchased during tbe year and it bas been possible to rearrange and extend tbe grader schedule with. a consequent considerable improvement of tbe maintenanee of gravel roads of tbe county. Tlie county crusher bas operated throughout the year and a considerable alnount of remetalling in tbe Waipawa, Clinton and Takapau ridings has been carried out. Tbe Ougo riding will be dealt witb shortly. A total of 12,369 cubic yards of metal and filliug was carted and used on county roads during tbe year. "During the year I have travelled over the county roads extensively and I am able to report that our roads are in good condition," added Mr Paulsen. "I trust that every member during the present year will do all that lies in his povver to keep up tbis bigh standard. "In conclusion I sincerely thank tbe membfers for their loyal co-operation during tbe past year, and I also express my gratitude to tbe staff l'or their willing support during tbe period under , raview."
