(Received 25, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 24. Major J. J. Astor, president of the Empire Pross Union at the opening of the annual conference at his home in Carlton House Terrace, emphasised the auspicious nature of the occasion, inas« much as it was Empire Day and the Imperial Conference was in aession. English newspapermen emphasised the value of the service of overseas journalists on British neWspapers. Sir Thomas Inskip, Minister of Defence, delivered an address on the power of the Press, _ espeeially for world-wide peace and Empire defence. He declared that the British publio must bp taught to acquire a taste for Empire' news which at present they .did not prefer to sensational trials or puhlic scandals. *The Empire Press had an unequalled opportunity of welding tho Empire into a united whole. Empire defence was no longer solely the interest of the United Kingdom. Too much emphasis on the vnlnerahility

SIR THOMAS INSKIP of Britain and her trade routes to air attack tended to produce a spirit of 'defeatism not in accordanee with facts. The British organisation was at present in full blast. All departments were working with the greatest efficiency and at tremendous pre»ssure.
