Manhandling Children

B.

B.

Sir, — I wish to reply to ' ' Lay On, MacDuff" as follows: — After Teading your letter in Saturday's paper I came to the conclusion "that you are not fair. not even to youiteelf. Your narrow views are far from being just, and one can picture you a grumpy old man, sick of everyone and every thing. You cer* tainly quoted a sad case that happened in Auckland, but the writer feels certain that the trouble was due to the unfortunate girl's home lifeYou know, "Lay On, MaeDuff," that professing Christianity and practising it aTe entirely two - different matters Children are teubject to their parents' religious views — stupid or otherwise. I will agree with you that daughters have no right to insult their mother. Now as regaTds "Wanderer," I like that nomadic term, and for all I kno-vV it may be very applicable in this case. Oh, how (as a true born Britisher) 3 respect that isecond word "Chivalry." But oh! how it grieves me when it is used ,by a worthless know-all. I do not suggest that "WandeTer" is a character of that type, yet worthless characters make use of Such bold terms. | While I agree that cases of this nature j are rare, I maintain that it makes the case as previously rec'orde^d all tha worse. I have nothing to say in fa.vour of the bottle by any means, but liquor had nothing whatsoever to do with this case. It was just a case o t [ being "cock of the walk." A badly-skinned nose and blackened eyes can not be called "proper chastisement.,> Eemember that the victim is a young wonian. Having no desire t| continue correspondence of this nature, 1 thank you, Sir, for the space allotted. —Yours. etc.

Hastings, May 24/37.
