HATUMA GROUP
The Hatuma Women's Institute held j a very happy fifth birthday party in the j Hatuma Hall, when there was a very iarge attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the Institute song, after . which the president, Miss Allan, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors and to their popular seeretary, Miss M. Simmons, who had returned after a lengthy illness. Mrs P. A. Bnddle, on behalf of.the members, presented Miss Allan with a novel bouquet, composed of sweets, as a mark of appreciation for the work she tiad done in making the Institute an outstanding success. Birthday greetings were received Erom the Waipawa, Porangahau, Wallingford, Ongaonga, Glengarry-Peri-Peri Institutes, and apologies were received from Mrs D. Campbell (Opapa) and Miss M. Bobertson. The programme arranged for the afternoon was a most enjoyable one. It opened with charades, representing songs, this being won by Mrs Wadman. Various other competitions were won by Miss A. E. Hobson, Mrs Lowther and Mrs C. L. Bobinson. Two solos rendered by Mrs P. A. Biddle wero much enjoyed. After a sumptuous afternoon tea had been served, the handsome birthday cake, decorated with a miniature crown, and small flags and its five ^andles, which were lit by Mrs S. A. Bobinson, a foundation member. was cut by Mrs M. Schroder, one of the oldest members. Following afternoon tea a most spectacular pageant, "Britannia," and her dependents was presented. Thc stage was appropriately decorated with pictures of the King and Qucen,
heralilic plaques aud fiags, the sides being lilled in with beautiful clirysaathemums. Britannia (Mrs Collins) reelining on the stage, sujiported by a miniature John Bull (Bobert Haldane), under tliree years, made a charming picture. Her dependents, in their natdonai dress, marched through the hall in twos \ip onto the stage and paid their homage, and when all were assembled made an impoeing group. Several announcements were made. A vote of thanks was tendered to Mrs J. Bood for donating the birthday cake, and to Mrs Collins, for decorating it. The competitions for next month will be: "The most attractiive dish, ' and "an article made from one yard of cretonne. ' ' Prizcs for the year were: Points prize, Mrs Howard 1, Mrs Kennedy 2, Miss J. Edgar 3. Best bloom in my garden, Mrs Howard 1. The singing of the National Anthem brought a happy afternoon to a close. ■ 1 III « IITTH — it—
