WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Pukahu Meeting Mrs L. W. Goldfinch presided at the monthly meeting of the Pukahu Women s lnstitute. After singing the oiucn-'s lnstitute song and reciting the Women's Creed, the president welcomed all present, especially several vLsitors from Hastings, including C. Clark, Mrs Underwood and Mrs Smith. Mention was made of the serious illness of Mrs Stewart, a valued member of the institute, and all hoped and prayed for her epeedy recovery. Tlie question of makiug the infant's layctte for community work was fully discusscd, and it was decidcd to purclmso the wool and make a start with tlie making, several members ofifeirng to knit a garment eacli. Slrs Goldlinch gave a full account of thc reccnt eouncil meeting in Napier,, wlfieh she attended as delegate. After a delicious tea served by the hostesses, i\tesdames Lean, Evans and j Brooks, had been enjoyed, Mrs C. Clark, of Hastings, gave a most able demnnstration on maldng a bridesmaid's bouquet, From the fraine of netting tc. the limshed beautiful bouquet, every step was most carefully shown and explamed, and while her nimble lingers were moulding so expertly Mrs Ciark gave her listeners many useful hmts on eolours to use, foliage most suitabie, wiring, etc., and also sliowed how to make a skouider spray, one brought for exiiibition being very dainty and deiiieate. This was later presented to Mis^ Orchard, seeretary. When the presiuent asked members to show their appreciation of Mts Clark 'e lovely work, the hearty applause with which she was greeted was an indicatdon of how much members enjoyed the interesting lesson. It was decided to hold a competition for bouquets later in the year, Mrs Clark kindly oifering a trophy for the best. She also said she would be very plea.scd to come ont and judge the competition, and was thanked for her kind offer. Mrs Clark also judged the coinpebitions for the day which resulted: — Best flower, Miss Kirkliam 1, Mrs "Kirkham 2, Mrs McKenzie 3. Pikelets, Mrs Kirkham 1, Miss Orchard 2, Mrs Wakefield 3. Best article from a sugar bag, Miss Orchard 1, with a lovely cloth beautifully worked in cross-stitch, Mrs Cummins 2, a very pretty cusliion, and Miss Clara Lang 3, a dainty tea-cosy. It was announced that the institute members wrere liaving a gift afternoon for Miss D. Kirkham, who is being married early in June, at Mrs Alan Crawford's residence on Friday, May 28, at 2 o'cloclc. The competitions for June will be six bran biscuits, and the best article from a 501b. flour-bag. There will also be a 10II call, "suggestions for future programmes. ' ' The singing of the National Anthem concluded a happy meeting. The bouquet was sent to Mrs Stewart | at the Hastings Memorial Hospilul froni the members.
