Greater Scope Wanted In Business DIVERSITY OF REMUS

DUNEDIN, Last Night. The annual conference of the New iZealand Master CaTriers and Customhouse Agents Industrial Association of Employers concluded this morning. The president ,(Mr. A. J. Curtis) occupied the chair. The following office-bearors were elected: President, Mr. A. J. Curtis (Wellington); vice-presidents, Messrs. J. H. Kirkwood (Dunedin) and W. I. J. Blyth (Wellington) ; executive committee, Messrs J. O'Brien, Barton Ginger and B. A. Maxria (Wellington), L. Pearson (Masterton), W. Thomber (Blenheim), C, G. Langridge (Palmerston North), Ern Smith (New Brighton), F. Goodwin and W. Winfield (Dunedin), C. A, Kerse (Invercargill), J. B. Wood . (Timaru), E. R. Dudley and T. E. Wiltshire (Christchurch), with two delegates to be appointed by the Te Puke and Hamilton associations; auditor, Mr. W. Irons; trustees, Messrs. A. J. Curtis and W. I. J. Blyth; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W» J* Mountjoy. The following remits were dealt with: — Otago: "That consideration be given to the question of opposing the enforcement bythe Government of the 30-mile restrietion on carriers." After discussion the remit was approved, the following resolution also being carried: "That . thp Government be asked to remove all except exempted areas and afford carriers greater scope • to carry goods ih districts in which they operate." Christchurch: "That owing to the fact that most of the wholesale houses are closed on Saturdays with the result that master carriers cannot cart their goods the Railways Department should not charge storage for Saturday." Mr. L. Pearson (Masterton) suggested that the following words should be added to the remit: "And that when railway truekloads are held up and' bulked en route some consideration should be shown to the carrier in unloading by not enforcing demurrago rates." These words were added" and the remit in its now form approved. Otago; ""That consideration be given to the standardisation of account forms for customs clearing and that a standardf'uniform schedule of charges be drawn up covering all service?. " , The chairman suggcsted that a customshouse conimittee should bc set up to go into tlie matter and report to the executive, the following coniinitteo being appointed:. Messrs. Wineficld (convener), Wiltshire, Barton Ginger, and J. B. Wood. .Otago: ''That transport eoinpanios employing A grade mechanies be authorised to inspect motor vohicles for the issue of warrants of litness. ' ' — Withdrawn. Te.Pulce: "That- employers of unliceused and unregislercd carriers be held to be jointly liable for any breaehes of the Act caused by such unlicensed or unregistered carriers while in their employ." — Approved. Invercargill: "That the New Zealand Railways Department should be asked to diatribute its packing aud-cartage of t

furniture removals and not to place all its business with any one firm." It was pointed out that a previous remit covered the question generally, the Invercargill delegate withdrawing the renait. Masterton: "Th^t it be a recommendation that the Minister of Transport be approached wihh regard to the compulsory membership of all carriers to the local associations." — Carried. Blenheim: "That it be a recommendation to the Main Highways Board that all Class III roads be raised to the seven-ton classification and Class IV roads to the five-ton classification.''' — Carried. Consideration was given to the report of the committee of inquiry into tho taxi and town carriers' business and. after general discussion on several clauses a resolution was carried ex-' pressing approval of the recommendations of the committee and strongly recommending the Government to adopt the suggestions contained in it." New Brighton: "That this federation considers that ancillary users should be brought into line.wifh. carriers by being licensed under the Transport Act." — (Carried.
