MR. HERBERT JAMES RUSSELL

Regret will be felt from one end of Hawke's Bay to the other at the death yesterday at Wellington of Mr. Herbert James Russell, of Napier, who for the past 21 years has filled the position of secretary to the Hawke's Bay War Relief Assoeiation — ever since its inception in 1916, in fact. In that capacity Mr. Russell won the liking and the warm regard not only of the many returned soldiers and their familles with whom he had from time to time to deal, but also of the contributors to the fund, the members of the assoeiation, and tbe general public. Deeply sympathetic, kindly, conaiderate and courteoqs, but practical withal, the late Mr. Russell carried out his dutics with tact and firmness combinod with sympatiiy that mado him the ideal •ecretary i'or such a position. In private life the late Mr, Russell ' carried tho

same qualities of kindliness and con* sideration, of ready sympathy with suffering and of warm friendship. Born at Ashton Wold, Northamptonshire, 66 years ago, the late Mr. Russell came to New Zealaud in 1881 with his parents in the Shaw, Savill barquentine, Willow Wave. In 1890, he set out from New Zealand for the KoolgaTdie (Western Australia) goldfields and during the voyage was shipwrecked on tlie Australian coast. After hearing of the many disapointinents of the goldfields, Mr. Russell nevertheless continued his journey and obtained a position with Dalgety and Co. at Geraldton, working for that firm in various offices for some 20 years. During that period he shw service in the South African War, rising to the rank of captain. Ho returned to Napier iu 1910, entering into business as an accountant with the late Mr| T. Yautier and latterly eontinumg on hii own account. Many branches of sporting activities claimed his attention. As a keen tennis player, a golfer and a prominent bowler, the late Mr. Russell had established himself as a well-known sporting figure and his' passing "Will be regretted by the whole commimity. To mourn their loss, in addition to Mrs. Russell of Fitzroy road, Napier, are two brothers, Messrs. W. J. Russell (Napier) and Mr. Albert Russell (SydnSy); one sister, Mrs. T. Vautier (Wellington); four sons, Messrs. Colin Russeu (Maraekakaho), Ti-evor Russell (Wellington), Alan Russell (Napier) and a younger son and -two daughters, Mrs. H. Kerr (Auckland), besides a younger daughter, to whom will be extended the sympathy of a'wide cirele of friends.
