Taradale Town Board Work During Past Year CHAIRMAN'S REVIEW Althot^h hampeied vftrous 'tifficulties, ♦iie Taradale Town Board last year carried out a most satisfactory programme of work. At last nigbt's meeting tho chairmau of the board, Mr J. Williamscn, reviewed the various activities ia ti'.e followingi report: — Works carried out. — (a) Avondale voad has been widened by seven chains, a most important work eliminating a very dangerous corner near the county boundary, (b) King street has been extended to Elbourne street, a distance of 25 chain of new roading. This proved a very heavy work and entailed the removal of a number of "ole man" willows, laying new drains, fen.cing, etc, The work is not quite complete a new culvert is required as well as the metalling of the road. Tlianks are due to the estates of Messrs Kelly, Kennedy, Lusk and Moeller, who made the im.provements possible by donating the land required. (c) A new drain was cut from Elbourne street to Rymer's drain. Thanks are due to the estates of Messrs H. Williams, Kennedy, Lusk and Moeller, for granting permission for the drain to Be cut through their property. Surfacing. First-coat work preparatory to both second coat. Avondale road fifteen bitumen sealing next summer has been carried out as follow?: — Avondale road 22 chains j Guppy road, 34 chains. Including JSieeve, Harpham, main higli- - ways, a total of 83 chains of secondcoat 'and 56 chain of first-coat work has been done. . . Main highways — Neeve-Harpham (58 chains). This was graded, inetalled and finished off with the second-coat bitumen seal, which constitutes a, very great improvement, as this road always formed a difficult problem in maintenance. N apier-Fernhill : ' The water-table along the foot of the old stop-bank was graded and surplus spoil removed. An 18-ihch concrete pipe culvex-t was laid at the intersection of Auckland roa.d which should materially assist the drainage of that locality. All highways were maintained at a good standard." Services: The park, notwithstanding the irregular season, has been kept in good order, while the memorial and grounds are outstanding in neatness and general perspective. Services: Every -endeavour is made to have the eanitary, rubbish collection and lighting services satisfactory and efficient. Jubilee of the town district. — From December 2 to 5 jubilee celebrations were held in connection with the constitution of tho town district, and the marked success of the whole of the functions will long remain in the memories of those who participated in them. Libr,ary: This important institution is successfuily controlled by a large and enthusiastic committee. Finance : Curtailed very largely ^by the lowering of the valuation on Urban Farm Lands, and in other ways, the board has found a great difficulty in keeping within the limit of the estimates set out at the beginning of the year, when we commenced with a credit balance of £99 in the general account. This has been reduced to £37 at the end of the year. Taking into consideration the work completed and the up-. ward trend of costs, this must he considered very satisfactory. The full pro- ' gramme set out for the year was not quite completed owing to the urgent and unforseen circumstances arising. It will be completed during the current year. The board wishes to recognise the very capable aird efficient work carried out by the clerk and overseer, Mr W. G. Jarvis, and his assistant, Miss E. Jnrvis, and also to commend the earnest endeavour of the outdoor staff in the performance of their duties;
