WITH THE HOUNDS
i braehead Hunt Under Patronage of Governor-General IPEAL C0ND1TI0NS (Contributed) WifjJH weather and a light northerly made conditions for the^rnebead rneet of the Hawh.e's Bay Hunt ldeal. The recent rains liad taken tlie stmg out o tlie ground. _ After the hunt bad moved aW froxu the plantation, where _ meinners met, a haro was found whieh twice circled the higest hills on Braehead and crossed over 011 to Mr Enc White s. Coming back from hia crop he was hunted towardp the big roadside lagoon. Here hounds- ovor-tan and the hare got a long start again and led back to the hUls. It appejared that the hunt might kill, as ' hounds were running strongly on good scent. * Nbt .jnore than 200 yards ahead of the pacii the quarry twice crossed the road on to Trevor Black's and then back on jt.o -S1*?® ^hite's.1 When henting out a gully close by a dam a fresh hare was started and hounds whipped off. My opinion is that •with: a little more perseveranco this hare shoqld have been found and Mlled. It wa? two o'cJp.ck an,d very hot, so we checked for ten jnjnutes. Another run across to the Tawse homestead and np towards the lake proved disappointing. Krom this time^ to 3.20 the field was heated to a xun that was equal to the be^t qf year$. Drawing cover on the lower swamp of Mr Eoslyn Tod's, we rau towards the iqjddle fiat and across it. A motor car turned the hunt again, ahd ' our hare crosisdd the "Park" creek and skirted the bank until it found a place t.o seramble up. We twice crossed the Park estate and on to , Mr Wallace Tod's, then on to the Kittow jcountry. Hlfiinately our hare crawled back to' the okl riyerbed and intp a ypung plantafion. Titne was closing in. Becahhe of a fresh bare starting we were unable to find and kill. The pack divided _her6, some following.the new line, which always giyes stronger scent, "and four hounds remained Ifossicking on the old (scent. "Home" was called after a solid four-mEe run. The Braehead Hunt, which met at the old plantation, was under the pa« tronage of His Excellency the Governor General, Lord Galway, and Mr and Mrs Eoslyn Tod, Mr Tawse and Mr Tawse jnr., were hosts tQ th.e meet. Our thanks are also due to Mesprs Treyor . Bla.ck, Bric White and James and Wallace Tod for the use of their countjry.
