TRANSHIPPED CARGO

Why Napier Consignment Was Unloaded at Auckland C. and D. LINE EXPLAINS Explanation of the circumstances which caused the transhipping ( the Napier cargo from the Port Gisborne at Auckland was made in a Ietter to the Napier Harbour Board yesterday^ by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line. Tbe ietter stated: — "We have for acknowledgment your Ietter of April 14 with reference to our recent action in being compelled to tranship at Auckland inward oargo destined for Napier by the Port Gisborne, and carefully note your remarks. ' ' In reply, we would advise that, owing to inferior work being carried out bv waterside workers during Ihe vessel's discharge, * particularly ut Auckland, it was impossible for us to adhere to this vessel's original loading schedule, and in the circumstances, in order to mainifcain our loading programme, which included a very large quantity of dairy produce (which, as you are aware, is now Governmentowned and for which certain delivery dates were required in London), we had no alternative but to tranship Napier commitments from Auckland. Certain Napier inward cargo was storcd in insulated compartments, . -d, as you will apprec ^ e, these compartments were required early as possible for loading purposes, which further accentuatcd the position. ''We endeavoured to make the best possible arrangements for ptompt transhipmen* of Napier cargo from Auckland. ''In conclusion, we would advise that we desire at all times to cairy out our obligations and always endeavour to safeguard the various interests, but on this particular occasion, as stated above, it was impossible for us to discharge this vessel's Napier cargo at that port."
