Car Fatality Near Woodville

WOODVILLE, This Pay. A aedan car, driyeu by Mr. Vietor Johnston, a C9mmercial traveller, traveUing towards Woodville on Monday night or early this morning, left the roiad in the Manawata Gorge near Ballance Bridge, three mjles from Woodville; ahd shot over a 60 foot bank into the river. The ear was badly smashed bnt was salvaged. The b#y of the driver, who was appareutly alo'nc, has so far not been recovered. |Jr, Johnston was a married man, aged 38, With one child, and resided at Mornington, Island Bay, Wellington. Shortly after 7 a.m. two public works employees werfi oyeling from Woodville toward the Manawata Qorge when the fovjuer nqticed skid roarkg on the road and the fence broken' immediately on the Woodville side of the bridge. On iooking over the bank they saw the smashed top of the car Just out of the water, which was 60 feet below. Cqmmereial papers were found on the» bstok; 1'he police at Woodville were informed and communiqated with the Wellington police, who advised that the car is that used by Johnston in hig. emploympnt. They could not state whether he would be alone.
