Fined £50 for Bookmaking

WELLINGTON, May 17. John O'Connor, labourer, aged 45, Was fined £50 by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., for usihg his premises as'a common gaming house. The police said that he had been taking a number of bets and had £266 18s in his possession when arrested. . . Counsel said that defendant lost his right arm at the war and difficulty in obtaining employment had driven hia. to break the law. The bets were only for 5s or 10s ancL the money found was the accumulatibn over a period as he didn't bank. He hadn't been before the Court previously.
