Havelock North Free From Paralysis Cases REPORTS TO THE BOARD There have been no cases of infantile paralysis reported in the Havelock North district Bince the outbreak of the disease, states the annual report of the sanitary inspector, Mr J). G. Joll, presented to the Havelock North Town Board at its meeting on Friday. "All possible precautions have been taken to prevent infection," said the report "I have been closely in touch with the Health Pepartment during the whole period of the outbreak, and all recommendations and instructions from the medical officer of health have been carried out to the letter. The restrictions on the use of the swimming-baths by children were strictly carried, out. "There were only two cases of infectious diseases reported in fhe town district. Both cases were pulmonary tuberculosis. One patient died and the other has been now classed as non-in-fectious, "I have made the annual survey of the higb-pressure water supply, and the' whole system is in a satisfactory condition. The annual sample of water was forwarded to the Dominion analyst, and he reports that the supply is satisfactory. The water samples were taken from St. Hill's well and the well in the centre of the village. Both the chemical and bacteriological examinations proved that in eachi case the water is suitable for domestie use. "One complete house-to-house inspection of the district was made and, with the exception of a number of leaking water taps, all the yards and prcmises . were found to be in a satisfactory condition. "The drainage system has been thoroughly inspected and all sewers and the three septic tanks are functioning satisfactorily. During my inspection of houses I found that in a number of cases down-pipes from the roof had been led direct into the system. Notiees were served on all oifenders and the necess.ary alterations have been made in eaeh case." "I would take the opportunity of pointing ont, however, that property owners should not in any circumstances be allowed to direct this water into the sewerage system as it interferes seriously with the action of the septic tanks and in times of heavy rain causes serious flooding of the main sewers in the lower parts of the town." The loose chips had been swept from all corners of sealed' roads, stated the Teport of the clerk, Mr W. H. Anderson. Clerk's Report. Now that the weather has broken a start will be made with g-ading the the shouJ'iers of the seai-;d roads to permit storm water to ilow ntdily into the watt:r channels, conti 'ned the report. Mr Forsyth, of the Trantport Departcnent, has made an inspection of the main roads with a view to tho erectiou of the spc-ad limit signj All arrangements for the sale of the electric plant have now been completed and the final payments made by both parties. Continuity of supply is now assured as both Government and Maraetotara current are available at all times. The matttr of representation on the Power Board has not yet been arranged with the Public Works Department. The rain has started the new grass on the Domain, and the football field is now in excellent condition. Cemetery Report. The cemetery committee reported i Twenty-six paths have been re-sealed, so that all paths in the older portion of the cemetery are in first-class -order, When funds permit we propose to seek authority to seal all drives. Maintenance would then be reduced to a minimum and upkeep costs reduced accordingly. The rain has had a beneficial effect on all growth, and the shelter belt of trees on the north eastern boundary should now come away well. • The spoil from the paths in the lower portion of the cemetery has been used to form a new drive round the upper portion, giving access for vehicular traffic to any portion of the cemetery.
Roads Committee's Report The roads committee reported:-— The widening of Joll road should be completed in about a fortnight. We recommend that the Power Board be asked to shift two poles on the Bowling Green corner to make the road saier for motor traffic. With the completion of this work the road improveJnent scheme is finished. Te Aute road has been inspected witb a view to forming a footpath from the the first bridge to the boundary. We suggest that the petitioners be asked to state where they consider the path should be formed. * Fitzroy road will not be satisfactory until it is tar sealed. We have instructed the clerk to have a water table formed across the entrance to Mr G. Nelson' s private road in Ellison road. The shoulders of all sealed roads should be graded when weather is- favourable. Instructions to cut back the hedge on tho angle corner of St. Hill's Lane have been issued. Further sealing ivork should be done on Napier-St. Hill's corner, such Work to be on the lines suggcsted by the clerk.
