UNEXPECTED HEARERS OF STRANGE STORIES
When film players want to confide in someone, it is usually an unexpectedperson to whom they go, as those familiar with the strange caty of Hollywell well know. .Usually, these persons are very close to the star; often they are relatives, but just as often are they not. Invariably they are persons whom the star has known a long time, and whose judgment the star respeets, A woman named Grace Newel knows more of the secret. hopes, ambitions and disappointments of Jeanette Macdonald than any other person. She is Jeanette 'e singing teacher. Miss Newell came to Hollywood with the star seven years ago when she appeared dn her first picture. She has remained with Jeanette ever oince, giving her daily lessons and working with hcr on every song. Like Miss MacDonald, Nelson Edrly confides in his singing teacher, Dr. Edouard Ldpps. Eddy brought Lippe to Hollywood with him. when he first started in pietures. They have worked together ever since on every detail in the star's career. It is strange, but they met under unpleasant circumstances. When Eddy was a young sikger in opera, he waa surprised io have a stranger approach him and say, "You have a nice voice, but you don't know how to use at." Eddy furned . away in anger. That night he thought the matter over, confaeted Lippe, who was the man, and' asked his advice. Lippo, a brilliant inusician and singer, was not physically able 1o achieve singing heights. so became Eddy's tutor. Mars Brothers When one wants to khow anything about the Marx Brothers, Eachel Smith, who happens to be their secretary, can answer it. She began working for the eomedians when they first came to Hollywood and ha's never left their employment. She handles their business, engagements and mail, and knows all of their professional and family sccrets. Freddie Bartholomew, naturally, confides in his Aunt Millicent, whilst Jean Harlow's coniidante is her mother, Mrs. Marino Bello. Some stars confide in other players. It is no secret that Joan Crawford and Claudette Colbert exchange confidences and advise one) another. Jamos Stewart always takos his secrets to Henry Eonda, with whom he roomed for years in Hollywood. Often workers in minor capaeiti.es become stars' confidantes. Marlene Dietrich is repprted to tell her secrets to Nellie Manley, her hairdresser. It is verified that Eleanor Powell does as much with Ann Lawsbn, a wardrobe girl, who even went to New York with the dancing star on her recent vacafion trip.
