, WELLINGTON, Lasf Night Exception to the proposal of the; Government to tako over long distance, jroad goods services was taken at ai lineeting of the Domiiiion executive of j jthe New Zealand Farmers' Union. The] Ifear was expressed ithat this was a. [preliminary to taking over all forms ofj igoods transport and that the elimina-i jtion of competition would not be con-! jducive to efficiency. The Dominion president, Mr W. W.' Mulholland, stated to-night the executive had discussed the question of the Government assuming control of longdistance xoad goods services running ialongside the railways, and delegate3 ;had expressed grave concern as to the .effect of this proposal on the cost and iefficiency of transport. It was pointei out that the increased costs thaf would ibe brought about would fall almost ;entirely on rural districts and particu:larly on the farming section. DelegatOs drew attention to the fact that the great advantage of motor (transport was ita mobility in meeting 'the needs of transport under many dififerent conditions. It was frequently able in country districts a little way (removed from the rkilway to bring igoods from town to th# door with only two handlings instead of at least four invofved in combined road and railway. transport. Concern was also expressed! jat the effect elitaination of competitionj jmight have on the service criven bv thej jrailways. j
