WHANGAREI, Last Night. Afl old landmark in the Whangarei Heads district, the Patua Bay Hotel, situated about 20 miies from Whangae rei, was destroyed by fire last night. The Ilcensee and his wife, Mr and Mrs Patrick Ohapiin, and their three children, Were preparing to go to bed when the fife was discqvered but, as there Wero no fire-fighting appliaaces available and the building was an oid oue, little could be done and practioally iiolhing was saved. So quickiy did the flattes spread that Mrs ChapliHj wluj was putting the children to oed, was compelledi to help them tb escap© through a window. The building was a single-storey one of 14 rooms and wa einsured.
