SUBTERRANEAN CLOVER

Not a Prohibited Plant In reply tO an inquirer at Waihau it can be definitely stated that subterranean clover is not included among recent prohibited importations So far very little of this seed is raised in New Zealand, but it is anticipated that within a few years the Dominion will be able to harvest its own requirements. At the present time there is an annual importation of about 30 tons of sub-clover seed of which the Mount Barker is the dominant strain. Steps are being taken by the Agriculture! Department to determine the .most suitable type for New Zealand. Experiments are being earried out in our own district under different sowing conditions on land that will grow very little else. The possibility of developing an expbrt trade in Hawke's Bay are bright. The seed could be harvested after the early lambs have gone away, thus giving the farmer an additional line of revenue. For the harvesting a special machine is required as the seed has to be brushed into it. Mowing does not take place as in the case of most other clovers, aifd practically all the best seed is underncath. For some time yet the Dominion will have to fely upon Australia for her supplies of sub-i clover seed.
