"THISTLE MOUTH"
Several Cases Occur In Hawke's Bay TREATMENT OUTLINED In certain - parts of the district sheep are reported to be affected with what is known as "thistle mouth." This, however, must not be mistaken for facial eczema The nose and underlip become scabby due to feeding on thistles or any other rough feed that is likely to wound the sheep about the mouth. The treatment,is quite simple. First wash affected parts with warm washing soda solution, then paint with an application of bluestone, glycerije and water, The respective parts being — one leaspoonful of bluestone, two ounces of glyeerine to a whislty bottle of soft water. Put through a race, the affected sheep can be treated quielily arid efficiently. After being treated, sheep should not be turned out on to thistles again but put ori to clean feed. It is not sound farming to allow thistles to reach this stage. If- cut in the -early stages they cannot harm stock in this way* In any case, why grow "thistles instead of grasS? This is a position that' the farmer" should eonsider in his own interests. ,
