DUCKS NOT PLENTIFUL
Our Own Correspondent.
Effect of Absence of ' Rain I
From
WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Bncks arei not nearly sp plentiful in Central Ha-vVke's Bay at - the • present time as sportsmen would wish. A shortage of. rain is the trouble ; in fact, for this time of the year, the. broad acpes are as parched at they were ih the middle of summer. At the- beginnirig of the shooting season there were some good bags. A party of six, including the Mayor of Waipukurau, Mr I. W. N. Mackie, returiied' from an excursion* on May 1 with about 80 ducks, but since then the luck has not been .nearly so good. Their hunting ground was Arlington. _ _ . Central ' Hawke's Bay is" badly in need of rain and plenty of it. There are quite a few ducks on the Hatuma lake, but this area receives so much attention that the competition is too keen for good bags to be taken. Sportsmen hope that, after the first heavy dovvnpour of rain, ducks - and swans from other districts will investigate Central Hawke'JS flay and provide better sport People say that the large quantity of rabbit poison laid around the countryside has. given the quietus to good pheasant and quail shooting.
