DONATIONS FROM LOCAL BODIES

DELUGED WITH REQUESTS FOR FINANCE
CFrom
WAIPUKURAU, This Day. The habit in vogue among various organisations of asking local bodies repeatedly for donations is deprecated by Mr N. M. Paulsen, chairman of the Waipawa County Couneil. He considers that by making donations every time they are sought, local bodies are encouraging private people to be "financially lazy. ' ' Despite some rather pointed comments on this subject at the couneil ;s monthly meeting yesterday, when eonsideration was given to a letter from the aeting-Prime Minister, the Hon. Peter Fraser, in referenco to the King George Y. Memorial Ikmd, he moved that the council increase its earlier grant of £5 5/- by a like amount. His remarks had the effect of an amencL ment being moved by Mr C. Thomsen to the effect that no further moneys be given, and three of the six councillors favoured this. With a smile, Mr Paulsen had to abide by his motion and to give his casting vote in favour of a further £5 5/- being given. The council decided also to open a local fund at its Waipawa office and to invite the publie to subscribe. The vajrious womem's inetitutes an. the county are to be aske.d to give their co-operation. ■
