MARIST BACKS WIN DAY

Celtic Play Really Gpod Game LOSERS UNFORTUNATE A definite superiorit^ in the reacguard gave Marists an easy victory over Celtic on the No. 2 area at Nelson Park. Hastings, the final secre heing 21 — 5. The margin of points, however, hardly conforms with the real merit of Celtic, who

played really success Way. The teams wereasfollow: — Marists. — Brewer; Alleii, Hanson, Wliite; Robins, Melvor; Moss; Exeter, Ireland, Armstrong; Hargreaves, J". OBrien, M. O'Brien, Allsop; Davis. Celtic. — Halligan; Garvey, Pullen, Etannah; Thompson, Gibb; Tomoana; Matai ra., Kelly, Rollander; Gillics, Me. Court, Maaka, Hollis; Bower.. With the wind in their favoar in the first spell, Marists indicated from tbo outset that they desired to make good ase of the backs, and they were early on the job, though the first scoring movement was that of the forwards. The Mclvor-Hansen-White combinationwas shaping excellently and repeatedly gained huge slices of territory from their passing bouts. The forwards, too, wero workmg well, and it was not until the game had been in progress 28 minutes that Celtic passed the quarterway for the first time, and then it was for Pullen to pave the way for Garvey to score a pretty try. In the meantime, however, Mar--ists had put themselves oight points up, and they fulfilled expectations by increasing this to 13—^5 at the interval, - the backs being responisible for a further try. . On changing over Celtic sought to tighten up the play, and for a good' spell were more than passing success. f ul, the forwards, with Bower und Mataora promfnent, more than held their own against the Marist pack, and kept the Marist backs rather subdued. It was, however, very hard work, and tiring for the forwards, while the* Celtic backs had also t.o work overtime becauae of the ever readiness of the Marist $aeks to swing into action as soon as the ball came into the open. Towards the end of the game the strain hegan to tell, hnfi slowly Marist regained supremaey in the set scrums and thie enabled their backs again to take a prominent part, two more spectaciilar tries coming their way before time was called. The scorers were — Marists; Hargreaves (try and three conversions), - Wliite (two tries), Mclvor and-Ben-son (try eaeh). Celtic: Garvey (tfy) and Pullen (conversion). Mr A. Kirkpatrick wa $ referee.
