Wairoa Meeting Discusses Aerodrome Question

WAIROA, Last Night. The council of the Chamber of Commerce met on Wednesday night, tho president, Mr. S. M. Ashburn, presiding. Mr. C. B. Peterson wrote regarding the tourist booklet, stating that 28S4 copies had been distributed, and another batch was being got ready. Referring to the aerodrome question, the County Council wrote stating that the joint committee had met to discuss the fact that the cost of- the Te Rato land was too heavy and it had been decided to ask the Government to again send an offer to endeavour to locate a cheaper site. Mr. W. Clark considered it was urgent to get an aerodrome locally as soon as possible, and instanced a loeal case that had to be travelled by car to Mohaka to reach an aerodrome or landing ground. Mr. Boyes iavoured the work being done by a municipai club, as in England, where considerable sums were got in iD this way. The chairxuan saidU he snpposed all they could do just now was to wait and see. The secretary held that one of the best reasons was defouce, and that it would enable local young men to go into training as pilots. At this stage the chairman extended a welcome to Mr. Boyce,.whom, he felt eure, would be a valuable addition to the strength of the' chamber. Mr. Boyes, replying, thanked the chairman for his kind remarks, and said he felt very strongly that there was great need for stresgmg the civic idea, not only as a group of pupils, but by using the echools to infuse .the spirit into all the townspeople. He had .elsewhere addressed the chamber on the question of civic pride, and there had been a good response, and he hoped to work in some of that while here. Mr. Eobinson congratulated Mr. Boyes on what he had already done, and the results were a credit to Mm. Mr. G. de Y. Eobinson reported on his delegation to the Hon. W. E. Parry's meeting, since when there was a more favonrable view of the question. After a round-table talk it was de- , cided, on the motion of Mr. Eobinson, seconded by the chairman, to affirm that the chamber approved of the princaple of the amalgamation oi Ijocal bodies, and favoured one local body to administer the work now being carried on by all the other Wairoa local bodies. j Mr. Eobinson brought up the desirability of making an inepection of tho Caves at Marumaru, to test their value. — It was decided to take advantage of an offer by Mr. G. Eead to lead such a party provided the permission of the owners of the access land be iirst obtained.
