Ellingham and E, CrOQseman, who wjtnessed the running pf the first Hawke's Bay Gup event.

Spepial efforts have been m&de hy the coeimiffqe tp maka the tucating worthy of the oceasion, and they are to be commended on the excellent arrangementa. A good downpour of rain would have been welcome a ehort time before the meeting to put the course in excellent racing condition. However, extensive' watering was carried out with the result that the track was in good order and not hard as was antlcipated. Very satisfactpry fields cQfipeted today, and SPme excpljent, racing took piace, providing patrons with an excellent afternoon 's eport. Tho haudicapping was carried out by Mr H. Coyle, of Wellington, and Mr W. J. Russell was in the judge's box. To-day was the first meeting since the newly-appointed secretaiy " to the club, Mr A. E. Wishart, took over his posxtion, and be was assistpd in his work by Mr H. S. Mops, tbe late secretary.

Mr G. D. Beatson, president of the vlub, who has been an inmatp of a private bospctal, was well enough to ' be able to attend during the afternoon. Mr W. H. Gaisford, the well-knowi^ sportsman, of Dannevirke, wbo was receiitly in an accident, was also able to attend. A broadcast description of the running was given by Mr G. McCormick, of Hastings. Between the events a mu* sical programme was xelayed th?ough loud-speakers. . t The single pool machine oply was in op.eration on the totalisator. From an even break iddo was first out from Taumau, Cotsfield and Unexpeeted, but when the first fenee had been negotiated Iddo led from Unexpeeted, Taumau and Cotsfield. * When comiug into the straight the first time Taumau went from' third back to last but one through a faulty jump. Iddo still held command from" Unexpeeted, Cotsfield and Journet passing the stands, and continiied to lead put of the straight, but at the sgven-furlpng post most of the runnera jumped slovenly, Taumau rau up aiongside tlie pacemaker going fiown the back stretch, and while Cotsfield went back to last both Lord Hereford and Jpuruet made fprward fnqyes, Going round the four-furlong bend Taumau was slightly ahead of Iddo, and this pair racepl to the penultimate fencp to lead the field, but here Taumau again made a faulty jumP from then on retired. ijfio was still there at the last fence, but here he began to tire, with Lord Hereford and Journet putting in strong claims. In the run hpme Lord Hereford 's racing condition was the cause of fiim outstaying Journet $0 win by half a length, with Iddo U * length back thjrd and Unexpeeted fourth. Time, 2.46. POUKAWA MAIDEN. IVom a splendid start Paul Bobesou was first to show out from Shani, Anu-. bis, Buster Brown and King's Hope. When the field took up their running positions Panl Bobeson led from Anubis,' Buster Brown, King's Hope, Asset, Triplex and CleatraG, while Gold Nymph, who drew wide out, was well baek. PajUl Boheson and Anibus still led with three furlongs to go, closely followed by Asset, Buster Brown, King'g Hppe and Gold Nymph gradually getting eloser to the leaders. The field swung into the home streteh witli the pacemaker still in front of Anubis. but here Asset ran very wide to lose any winniqg chance she possessed. In the run to the judge's box Paul Eobeson was challenged by Buster Brown. and in n ding-dong finish the latter got there by a short head, with Gold Nymph a length back third, followed by Shani. Cleatrae and Triplex. Time, 1.8 4-5.
